What do you actually do downtown on a Wednesday?
Not a concert Friday, not the first Thursday of the month when the Art Walk fills the sidewalks. Just an ordinary Wednesday or the second and third Thursday of a random week. For most of the last few years, the honest answer was: not much, unless you drove out to Progress Drive or waited for the calendar to catch up to you. That changed in July, and the change has an address.
The Gap Nobody Names
Downtown Clarksville has two real anchors right now. The first is the First Thursday Art Walk, a self-guided run through galleries and storefronts from 5 to 8 p.m., rain or shine, once a month from May through October. The second is Downtown @ Sundown, the free concert series at Downtown Commons on Legion Street, which runs on select Fridays in the same window, also May through October.
Notice the shape of that. One Thursday a month gets programmed. Two or three Fridays a month get programmed. That leaves every other Wednesday and most Thursdays of the summer with nothing organized downtown at all, which is a strange gap for a part of the city that has spent years building a reputation as a place people actually go after work. Live music at Beachaven Vineyards on Dunlop Lane fills Friday through Sunday, but that's a fifteen minute drive from Legion Street, not a walk from it.
Until this summer, if you wanted a downtown option on a plain Wednesday evening, there wasn't a clear one.
119 College Street Fills It
Leatherwood Distillery opened its new location at 119 College Street in July, and the timing matters more than the ribbon cutting itself. Founder Andy Lang, a retired Green Beret who started distilling out of necessity during Special Forces deployments in Afghanistan, opened the brand in Pleasant View in 2017. The operation later moved to Progress Drive in Clarksville, and this summer it moved again, into downtown.
"We were in Pleasant View for six years, moved to Progress Drive for two years, and now we're here."
That's Lang, quoted in Clarksville Online's coverage of the grand opening. His partners now include Joe Maynard, Brian Lafond, and Laurel Harris, and the new building holds about 150 people with a warming kitchen for light food. For bigger events, they bring in catering from Shelby's Trio, which sits just up the hill.
The hours are the part that actually answers the Wednesday question. Leatherwood is closed Mondays and Tuesdays, open 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays, and open earlier with a later close on Fridays and Saturdays. They're also bringing in local musicians specifically on Fridays and Saturdays, layered on top of the regular hours, not replacing them.
Run the math against the existing calendar. Three Thursdays out of four aren't Art Walk Thursdays. Most Wednesdays have never had a downtown anchor at all. Leatherwood's hours land squarely on both.
What the Address Buys You
The old Progress Drive location worked fine as a distillery, but it sat in an industrial stretch of Clarksville, useful if you were already driving there and not much else. The new spot on College Street sits inside the same walkable downtown core as Downtown Commons and Shelby's Trio, described on the distillery's own site as settled along the banks of the Cumberland River. The site also sits near the DoubleTree by Hilton project planned for the same stretch of downtown.
That's the actual shift. Clarksville didn't get a new distillery. It got an existing, already-established local brand relocating its taproom into the same walkable downtown core where the concert series, the Art Walk, and the riverfront already draw people on the nights those things happen. On the nights they don't, there's now somewhere to walk to instead of somewhere to drive to.
The Rest of the Summer, Dated
Downtown @ Sundown already has its full lineup locked through October, presented by TriStar Beverage of Clarksville and hosted at Downtown Commons, 215 Legion Street. Every show starts at 7 p.m., food trucks line Main Street, and beer is available for purchase. Pets, coolers, smoking, vaping, and outside alcohol aren't permitted, so plan around that if you're bringing a group.

That's the full remaining schedule as reported by NewsChannel 5 in May. Two more Fridays this month, then two more in September, then one more in October before the series pauses for the year.
Where This Leaves a Normal Wednesday
Put the two calendars next to each other and downtown Clarksville's summer looks different than it did a year ago. There's still exactly one Art Walk Thursday a month and two or three concert Fridays. What's new is that the Wednesdays and off Thursdays, the nights that used to have nothing scheduled downtown at all, now have a place that's actually open, actually downtown, and actually run by people who've been building this brand in Clarksville since 2017.
That's not the kind of thing that shows up in a tourism roundup or a chamber of commerce press release. It's the kind of thing you notice because you live three blocks from Legion Street and you've started walking past College Street on a random Thursday and seeing the lights on.
